Volkswagen is set to resurrect International Harvester’s Scout nameplate and launch it as a separate brand dedicated to manufacturing body-on-frame off-road vehicles. Yet, this isn’t the first time the German automaker has delved into the world of rugged SUVs. Back in 1978, Volkswagen introduced the Iltis (Type 183 internally), a model reminiscent of the Jeep CJ. More recently, the company’s design department revealed a sketch depicting an ambitious, Amarok truck-based SUV that unfortunately never progressed beyond the concept phase.
The sketch was made public by Albert Kirzinger, the head of design for Volkswagen’s Commercial Vehicles division, who shared insights on its development journey. Styled for off-road capability, the SUV featured a tall stance and a host of rugged accessories, such as a roof rack and a snorkel-type air intake system, evoking comparisons to the Nissan Xterra.
Even though the off-roader didn’t make it to production, the technical specifications likely went unfinished. Based on the Amarok pickup, which isn’t available in the United States but is sold in numerous global markets, the SUV diverged significantly from the truck’s design. Notably, it showcased a tall front end with “AMAROK” branding on the hood, slim LED lights, and a grille with distinctive honeycomb-shaped inserts. The integration of rear door handles and marker lights on the wheel arches was evident in its side profile.
While the SUV could have potentially positioned Volkswagen as a competitor to the Toyota 4Runner in the United States, the chances of it reaching American showrooms would have been slim. Instead, the global market would have seen it facing off against rival offerings like the Ford Everest, Toyota Fortuner, and Isuzu MU-X. Although it would have been a compelling addition to the Volkswagen lineup, there are currently no signs indicating its eventual production.
