The journey for mainstream success kicks off for the Alpine A290 electric hot hatch

In May 2023, Alpine, which is owned by Renault, gave a glimpse of its reentry into the hot hatch segment with the introduction of an electric concept car named the A290_β (pronounced “A290 beta,” emphasizing its concept car status). This design study, with a blend of futuristic and retro elements, was closely linked to the Renault 5 Prototype concept unveiled in 2021. Following this, Alpine made a significant announcement, revealing plans for a major model offensive. A striking image of an “Alpine Garage” showcased a lineup of seven new vehicles set to hit the market by 2030. This move marked Alpine’s expansion into mainstream segments for the first time in its 69-year history.

The first of these new models is the production A290, an electric hot hatch set to hit the market in a limited-build Premiere Edition. Additionally, there will be serial production models available in GT, GT Premium, GT Performance, and GTS trims. Every trim level is equipped with a single motor on the front axle, delivering a powerful 221 pound-feet of torque. The GT and GT Premium trims offer 177 horsepower, while the GT Performance and GTS trims push out 215 hp – requiring drivers to activate an Overtake function to unleash the full potential.

Weighing in at 3,261 pounds, the A290 can accelerate from zero to 62 miles per hour in 6.4 seconds in its more powerful trims. The vehicle features an innovative regenerative braking system, with a dedicated button on the steering wheel to cycle through four levels of regeneration.

Powered by a 52-kWh battery, the A290 offers an estimated range of 236 miles on the WLTP cycle. The vehicle also boasts a fast-charging capability, allowing for a 15-minute charge to add roughly 90 miles of range.

Inside, the A290 is equipped with advanced technology, featuring a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen. Even the base GT model comes standard with premium features such as 19-inch wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, heated sport seats, and more.

The A290 lineup includes exclusive offerings such as the GTS Premiere Edition, limited to just 1,955 units in tribute to Alpine’s founding year. Available in three distinct themes – Beta, La Grise, and La Bleue – this special edition model will offer unique features and styling elements.

While pricing details for the A290 have not been disclosed for the home market, customers can anticipate a premium over the Renault 5 sister hatch, priced at €30,000 ($32,398 U.S.). With its blend of cutting-edge technology, performance, and stylish design, the Alpine A290 is poised to make a significant impact in the hot hatch segment.
