Volvo EX90 to launch without some features, will be added later through OTA updates

Volvo’s announcement of EX90 production at its South Carolina plant comes with a few caveats that potential customers should be aware of. In an email to customers awaiting delivery, Volvo revealed that some units may be missing certain features. This includes safety and ADAS features, such as those related to the lidar system which Volvo has heavily emphasized. While the “Lidar first safety scenario” will receive an update to enhance the car’s capabilities, some lidar functionality may still be limited.

Additionally, issues related to battery drainage while parked have been highlighted. The EX90 is reported to lose around 3% of battery charge over the first three days of being parked without charging. This is due to the core computing system needing to remain active to support the car’s advanced functions. However, after 72 hours, the car will enter a deep sleep mode to conserve battery power.

Other missing features include smart charging, Plug & Charge capability, and bi-directional charging. These features can make charging the EX90 more cost-effective and convenient for drivers. Furthermore, Apple CarPlay and a light theme for the driver cluster and infotainment will not be available initially, with only a dark theme offered on delivery.

While these omissions may not be ideal for prospective buyers, it is worth noting that EX90 deliveries are not set to begin until later this year. Therefore, there is a possibility that the list of missing features could change through Over-The-Air (OTA) updates before the SUVs hit the road.
