UK Research Finds That Hybrids and EVs Have Higher Chance of Colliding With Pedestrians

Pedestrian safety is a growing concern in the United States, with pedestrian deaths on the rise in recent years. Factors such as distracted driving have contributed to this alarming trend. Interestingly, studies have shown that hybrids and electric vehicles pose a greater risk to pedestrians compared to vehicles with traditional combustion engines.

Research conducted in the UK revealed that hybrids and electric vehicles are twice as likely to be involved in pedestrian accidents, and this risk increases to three times in urban areas. The main reason behind this increased risk is the quieter nature of electrified vehicles, making them harder for pedestrians to detect, despite the mandatory sound generation at lower speeds. Furthermore, these vehicles are often driven by younger, less experienced drivers.

While the UK study shed light on this issue, a previous study by the U.S. Department of Transportation in 2017 also highlighted the higher risk posed by EVs and hybrids compared to traditional cars, especially during low-speed maneuvers. Phil Edwards, one of the authors of the UK study, emphasized the need for the government to address these risks as they push for the phase-out of petrol and diesel vehicles.

Apart from the noise factor, Edwards pointed out that the stronger acceleration and greater weight of EVs can also contribute to longer stopping distances, further complicating pedestrian safety. He stressed the importance of implementing more stringent regulations to ensure the safety of pedestrians as electric vehicles become more prevalent on the roads.
