Toyota Highlander to transition to all-electric model, report shows

Toyota’s venture into the electric vehicle (EV) market may have been slower compared to its competitors, but the Japanese automaker has proven to be strategic and competent in its approach. Recent reports suggest that Toyota is gearing up to electrify one of its popular family SUVs, the Highlander, with plans to introduce an all-electric version, as well as a Lexus variant called the TZ. Additionally, Toyota is set to offer more hybrid options for the Grand Highlander, while retaining internal combustion engines for the vehicle.

According to David Christ, Toyota’s U.S. general manager, the company is also set to expand its lineup of electrified vehicles by introducing new plug-in hybrid models. Christ mentioned that plug-in availability will be extended across various models, including potential candidates like the 4Runner, Sequoia, Tacoma, and Tundra.

Although Toyota is committed to electrifying its lineup, exceptions will be made for performance-oriented models like the GR86 and Supra. The GR Corolla may also have a limited lifespan, potentially not overlapping with the new hybrid options. To make Toyota’s electrified vehicles more accessible, production in the U.S. will make them eligible for tax credits, mitigating the higher costs associated with the brand.

Furthermore, Toyota is considering a reevaluation of its bZ (“Beyond Zero”) naming scheme, with a possible introduction of a smaller bZ3X model to accompany the bZ4X. The aim is to create more memorable and recognizable names for its vehicles, with the Highlander likely to sport a badge that aligns better with Toyota’s established brand identity. Despite these changes, Toyota remains committed to developing innovative bZ models in the future.

While Toyota has a strong foundation in hybrid and fuel cell technology, its new CEO, Koji Sato, is steering the company towards platform changes that have caused some internal confusion. Nonetheless, Toyota’s broad approach to electrification remains steadfast, reflecting its dedication to sustainable mobility solutions in the automotive industry.
