The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer Unveiled as an Electric Wagon

The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer, previewed in 2023, marks the brand’s inaugural foray into the electric station wagon segment, expanding its offerings to appeal to a broader base of consumers. Positioned at the upper end of the Volkswagen lineup, this electric station wagon is designed to rival SUVs, offering a spacious cargo area without compromising on style or performance.

While the decision to launch a wagon in 2024 may seem unconventional, the Tourer is strategically targeted for the European market, where demand for crossovers and SUVs remains strong, but there is still a niche for large wagon-style vehicles. The design of the ID.7 Tourer closely resembles the sedan counterpart, featuring a sculpted bumper, horizontal headlights connected by a light bar, and a sleek character line along the sides. However, modifications to the design, such as a flattened silhouette and bright strips near the roofline, maximize cabin space and achieve a sporty aesthetic.

Behind the wheel, the ID.7 Tourer shares a striking similarity with the sedan, sporting a small digital instrument cluster, a flat and expansive dashboard with electronically-operated air vents, and a 15-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. The distinguishing factor is the impressive trunk space, offering up to 21.3 cubic feet with five passengers and 60.5 cubic feet when the second-row seats are folded flat.

In terms of performance, the technical details of the ID.7 Tourer are yet to be revealed by Volkswagen. However, it is confirmed that the Tourer will be available with two different battery packs, with the largest option providing a maximum driving range of up to 425 miles in Europe’s WLTP cycle. Built on the modular MEB platform, the Tourer is expected to come standard with a 282-horsepower single-motor, rear-drive powertrain, with the potential for an all-wheel-drive configuration by adding a second electric motor to the front axle. Fast charging capabilities will allow the larger battery to reach 80% capacity in under 30 minutes.

The ID.7 Tourer is anticipated to arrive at dealerships across Europe in the first quarter of 2024, with pricing details yet to be announced. While a U.S. launch has not been confirmed, sales of the ID.7 sedan are scheduled to commence in the second half of 2024, hinting at the potential expansion of the Tourer into other markets.
