The slowest-charging electric cars: results of first head-to-head testing

Charging speed is a crucial factor for potential buyers of electric vehicles. It varies based on several factors, such as weather and input, so Edmunds decided to provide a comprehensive comparison of charging speeds. This comparison provides valuable information to help consumers make informed decisions when choosing an electric vehicle.

One major factor affecting charging speed is the vehicle’s chemistry and engineering differences. In addition, the temperature outside, temperature of the battery, the number of people at a charging station, and software settings that protect the battery’s long-term health all affect charging speeds.

To accurately measure charging speeds, the experts at Edmunds used data from the firm P3 to monitor electricity use while an electric vehicle was connected to a level-3 fast charger. The dataset included power-request communications between the vehicle and the charging station to track each battery’s capacity. Combined with Edmund’s data on electricity-per-mile on different vehicles, the results give one of the first head-to-head measures of charging speeds across automakers and models.

Of the 43 electric vehicles tested, the 10 slowest-charging in Edmunds’ study are as follows:

– 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat: Miles per charging hour – 332
– 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum: Miles per charging hour – 319
– 2022 Rivian R1T: Miles per charging hour – 316
– 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition (20-inch wheels): Miles per charging hour – 315
– 2022 Rivian R1S: Miles per charging hour – 312
– 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E: Miles per charging hour – 294
– 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance: Miles per charging hour – 257
– 2022 Chevrolet Bolt: Miles per charging hour – 179
– 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV: Miles per charging hour – 172

This information can be incredibly useful for individuals considering the purchase of an electric vehicle as an easy and convenient charging experience is a key aspect of owning an electric vehicle. This comprehensive comparison helps buyers weigh the charging speed along with other factors when deciding on a new electric vehicle.
