Auto expert Sandy Munro recently took a Tesla Cybertruck on a road trip and discovered an issue with the backup camera system. The rearview mirror becomes ineffective when the tonneau cover is down, obstructing the view of the back window completely. Despite the seven cameras equipped on the Cybertruck to assist with maneuvering, Munro faced difficulty in accurately judging the space behind the vehicle while using the rearview camera alone.
Munro’s experience highlights the challenges drivers may encounter when attempting to back up the Cybertruck. The size and weight of the vehicle necessitate a high level of caution similar to that required when operating a class eight truck. Despite its impressive features and technology, such as the steer-by-wire system, drivers must be mindful of the vehicle’s dimensions and handling characteristics.
The Cybertruck’s multiple camera feeds, including one that faces the driver in-cabin, provide useful assistance, but the issue with the rearview camera when the turn signal is activated adds an extra layer of complexity. Tesla owners can access and navigate through the camera feeds using a steering wheel button and benefit from features like automatic display of the rear camera feed in reverse.
As highlighted by Munro’s experience, owners of the Cybertruck may need some time to adapt to its unique features and handling characteristics, especially when it comes to the backup camera system.
