Pickups continue to dominate auto sales in 2023: A review

The auto industry is slowly but surely recovering from the supply chain issues and inflation that plagued it for over three years. 2023 saw a surge in auto sales, with the F-Series pickups claiming the top spot for the 47th year in a row. The truck market, in particular, performed exceptionally well, with Americans showing a strong preference for both big and small trucks.

In the full-size segment, GM’s Silverado and Sierra outsold all other competitors, with Ford’s F-Series following right behind. The return to this “traditional” finishing order is noteworthy, as is the fact that Chevy has separated itself from Ram, regaining its #2 nameplate position. Toyota’s Tundra also saw a 20% increase in sales, showing its relevance in the market.

The midsize truck segment faced challenges during the pandemic, with several trucks selling more than expected due to limited availability. The Jeep Gladiator, despite initially performing well, experienced a nearly 30% drop in sales in 2023. Ford’s Ranger, which debuted in sixth place, faced challenges related to production output due to retooling for the redesigned truck.

The compact pickup segment, which features the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, had a successful year in 2023. The Maverick, designed to replace Ford’s compact, economical Focus sedan and hatchback, saw a 27% production increase from 2022. Hyundai’s Santa Cruz performed admirably as well, outselling both the GMC Canyon and Ford Ranger.

Electric pickups are still a relatively small segment, with the F-150 Lightning leading the pack. Despite being an outlier, Rivian delivered approximately 50,000 vehicles in 2023, including the R1T, R1S, and commercial delivery vans. However, GM’s Ultium-based trucks struggled, with the Hummer EV and Silverado EV models barely making a mark in the market.
