SILVERSTONE, England — Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton announced that he will be joining Ferrari in 2025 after the 2024 season, stating that it feels surreal to be embarking on his final year with Mercedes.
During the unveiling of Mercedes’ 2024 car at Silverstone, Hamilton reminisced on his 11-year journey with the team, expressing gratitude for the privilege of working with such a dedicated group of individuals. Hamilton joined Mercedes in 2013 and won six of his seven titles with the team.
Mercedes, under the leadership of team principal Toto Wolff, is determined to make a significant impact in the upcoming season, with Hamilton acknowledging the challenging past two years and emphasizing the team’s focus on regaining its former strength.
The new car, the W15, marks a complete redesign for Mercedes and is set to feature mechanical changes aimed at translating into better performance and increased predictability. The team is eagerly anticipating its debut at the pre-season testing in Bahrain next week.
Following the restructuring of F1 rules in 2022, Mercedes faced difficulties in adapting to the new ground-effect aerodynamics, which impacted their performance. Despite the setbacks, Wolff remains optimistic, citing the team’s talented drivers and the commitment of the entire organization as strong assets moving forward.
On the other hand, Ferrari has welcomed the signing of Hamilton, expressing that it presents a “huge opportunity” for the Italian team. Hamilton is set to team up with Charles Leclerc once he joins Ferrari, which will result in Carlos Sainz Jr. seeking placement with a new team for the following year.
