Hyundai Reveals Hydrogen and Software Initiatives at CES 2024

Hyundai made a big splash at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show by outlining its commitment to hydrogen development and software implementation in its vehicles. The company’s dedication to making hydrogen a major part of the renewable energy mix is evident in its comprehensive approach. Hyundai will be consolidating all aspects of its hydrogen work, such as production, storage, transportation, and utilization, under its HTWO brand. This marks a significant step towards promoting the use of hydrogen as a clean fuel source.

One of the key areas of focus for Hyundai is the production of hydrogen through innovative methods. The company is developing PEM electrolyzers for hydrogen production at a “megawatt-scale,” providing a more compact and efficient way to produce high-purity hydrogen. Additionally, Hyundai is exploring other methods for producing hydrogen from various waste materials, including biogas from organic waste and waste plastics. These efforts demonstrate Hyundai’s commitment to advancing the use of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source.

On the utilization front, Hyundai will continue its deployment of commercial trucks and related infrastructure powered by hydrogen fuel cells. The company has already been operating XCIENT fuel cell trucks at the Port of Oakland, with plans to expand their use at its EV factory in Georgia. This initiative underscores Hyundai’s commitment to utilizing hydrogen as a clean energy solution in the transportation sector.

In terms of software, Hyundai aims to achieve “software-defined everything” (SDx), with a focus on “software-defined vehicles” (SDV). This involves creating its own app market and providing development kits for app developers to create software for Hyundai vehicles. By venturing into the app market, Hyundai seeks to provide additional value to its customers and offer a unique ecosystem for app developers within the automotive industry.

Hyundai also plans to integrate large-language model AI into its voice assistant and navigation technology, enhancing the user experience and providing advanced capabilities for fleet operators. These developments align with Hyundai’s strategy to offer autonomous vehicles and create new opportunities for accessing vehicles.

As Hyundai continues to invest in hydrogen technology and software innovation, the automotive industry can expect to see significant advancements in sustainable energy solutions and digital integration in the coming years. This represents an exciting time for the automotive sector as it moves towards a more sustainable and tech-driven future.
