Hidden Gem: 1995 Chrysler New Yorker Found in Junkyard

Chrysler has a rich history with the New Yorker, a name that first appeared on its cars back in 1940. With the exception of a few brief interruptions, New Yorkers were in continuous production through the 1996 model year. A recent discovery in a Phoenix, Arizona car graveyard has put the spotlight on one of the last New Yorkers ever built.

The 1994-1996 New Yorker was constructed on an elongated version of the Chrysler LH platform, which evolved from the Renault-derived Eagle Premier acquired by Chrysler in 1987. This generation of New Yorkers was part of the same family as the Chrysler LHS and closely related to models such as the Dodge Intrepid, Chrysler 300M, Chrysler Concorde, and Eagle Vision.

Although not quite as impressive as earlier New Yorker models, it offered a spacious, comfortable, and reasonably powerful ride with its 214-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine. The original manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for this vehicle was $25,596, which would be approximately $52,396 in today’s dollars. In comparison, the virtually identical 1995 Chrysler LHS had a starting price of $29,595, and the 1995 Dodge Intrepid began at just $17,974.

Despite its storied history, the prestige of the New Yorker had been gradually eroded over the years, from its heyday of luxury to being little more than a dressed-up version of other models. The vehicle in question was available in Canada and Mexico as well, catering to a wider market.

Looking back, it’s worth noting that the New Yorker was all the rage in its earlier years, inspiring songs and serving as the emblem of American luxury cars. However, the landscape of the automotive industry continues to evolve, and the New Yorker’s legacy showcases the evolution of luxury cars in the U.S.
