Ford announces a safety recall affecting about 2,000 units of the Transit Trail, a rugged version of the full-size Transit van. The recall, identified as number 24V-226 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), addresses concerns with the 30.5-inch tires that distinguish the Trail model. These tires have been found to rub in certain conditions, potentially leading to premature wear and flat tires that could compromise vehicle control.
Specifically, the recall applies to Transit Trail vans manufactured between March 15, 2022, and March 6, 2024, with Ford estimating that approximately 25% of the total impacted vehicles may exhibit the tire rubbing issue. Ford attributes this problem to insufficient packaging allowance, causing the front tires to come into contact with the front wheel arch liner and body flange during specific vehicle loading, steering angle, and braking conditions.
In response to field reports and internal analysis, Ford has identified scenarios where the front tires can rub against the wheel arch liners at 60% of full turn while braking, particularly when the van is near its Front Gross Axle Weight Rating (FGAWR). Although no injuries or accidents related to this issue have been reported, Ford is proactively addressing the concern by contacting affected vehicle owners starting April 8, 2024. The company is actively developing a remedy for the problem but has not yet disclosed the specifics of the proposed fix or a timeline for its implementation.
