Ford sets ambitious targets for software sales to small business truck fleets

HomeTown Services, a heating and cooling repair company based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is taking proactive measures to enhance the efficiency of its fleet operations. The company is set to deploy driver monitoring cameras in select trucks to ensure better oversight of driver behavior. Additionally, HomeTown Services has already implemented a system that utilizes streamed data to alert drivers who are idling for extended periods, thereby preventing unnecessary fuel wastage.

Del Underwood, the Vice President for purchasing and fleets at HomeTown Services, highlighted the importance of addressing issues such as prolonged vehicle idling. He mentioned that receiving real-time text messages reminding technicians to either turn off idling trucks or proceed to their next assignment has proved effective in curbing fuel consumption.

Ford Motor Co’s commercial vehicle unit, Ford Pro, stands to benefit from the increased focus on software-related services in the automotive industry. By offering connected-vehicle services like driver monitoring systems to small and medium-sized fleet operators, Ford Pro aims to generate substantial profits. Ford CEO Jim Farley has emphasized the significance of software and service sales within Ford Pro, positioning it as the future of the automotive industry.

While established players like Geotab and Verizon dominate the telematics services market for large vehicle fleets, Ford sees an opportunity to cater to small and medium-sized businesses. By targeting this segment in North America and Europe, Ford Pro anticipates earning a significant share of its pre-tax profit from software and services within the next two years.

Through strategic initiatives and innovative offerings, Ford Pro aims to enhance its revenue streams by leveraging its software capabilities. With a focus on software subscriptions and additional services like insurance, Ford Pro forecasts increased revenue per vehicle. The implementation of telematics connections enables predictive maintenance, enhancing customer experience and driving incremental revenue for Ford Pro.

As Ford Pro continues to expand its software services, it faces challenges such as converting free users to paid subscribers. By providing value-added solutions like battery monitoring for electric vehicles, Ford Pro aims to demonstrate the benefits of its software offerings. Partnerships with businesses like Fize Electrique, which benefited from Ford Pro’s software during a trial period, showcase the potential for transitioning to an all-electric fleet.

Ongoing experimentation with new software services underscores Ford Pro’s commitment to innovation. While some projects may not yield the desired results, Ford Pro remains focused on delivering solutions that enhance operational efficiency for commercial fleet operators. Despite challenges and the evolving competitive landscape, Ford Pro’s emphasis on software and services positions it as a key player in the automotive industry’s transformation.
