About four months ago, Jeep provided a sneak peek of the upcoming Jeep Wagoneer S battery-electric SUV, showcasing an interior with four screens and electrically operated doors. Now, a new video has emerged, filmed at Willow Springs International Motorsports Park in Rosamond, California, featuring the Jeep lined up next to a Tesla Model Y Performance on the straight. Though not a full-on race, the video serves as a metaphor for Jeep gearing up to compete against America’s best-selling EV.
During the video, a stopwatch is brought out as the Wagoneer S edges ahead, clocking a time of 3.4 seconds flat for the 0-60 sprint, factoring in an initial rollout. This impressive acceleration beats the Model Y Performance’s official time of 3.5 seconds, thanks to the Wagoneer S’ powerful motors generating 600 horsepower and 617 pound-feet of torque, compared to the Model Y’s estimated 550 hp and 487 lb-ft. The Tesla gracefully exits the track after the defeat.
In addition to its speedy performance, the Wagoneer S boasts an estimated range of over 300 miles on a single charge, surpassing the Model Y Performance by at least 21 miles. However, it’s worth noting that the Tesla starts at just over $52,000 before incentives, while the Jeep is expected to be priced between $80,000 and $100,000.
The video, titled “Surpass Yourself,” hints at the real competition lying within the Jeep lineup, particularly with the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, which also achieves a 3.5-second 0-60 time and previously started at nearly $92,000. For a similar price point, potential buyers might consider the Rivian R1S, offering four motors, 835 hp, 908 lb-ft of torque, a quick 3.0-second sprint to 60 miles per hour, and an estimated 321 miles of range.
