European regulators aim to encourage carmakers to reintroduce buttons in vehicles

In recent years, car manufacturers have been phasing out physical buttons in favor of touchscreen controls integrated into the infotainment system. While this trend helps save space and reduce manufacturing costs, it has not been well-received by all drivers. Responding to customer concerns, European regulators are introducing new requirements for car interiors.

Starting January 2026, all new vehicles sold in the European Union must include physical buttons or switches for essential functions such as turn signals, hazard lights, horn, windshield wipers, and eCall. These features are necessary for a car to achieve the highest crash test rating. While there are no financial penalties for non-compliance, cars lacking these physical controls will not be eligible for a five-star safety rating.

Matthew Avery, director of strategic development for the European New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP), highlighted the potential dangers of touchscreen overload in vehicles. The NCAP’s new regulations aim to address this issue and prioritize driver safety by ensuring easy access to critical functions without unnecessary distractions.

Although some automakers have already embraced touchscreen technology for certain controls, most vital functions in vehicles still rely on physical switches or buttons. While models like the Volkswagen ID.7 may feature touchscreen-controlled air vents, the core safety functions outlined by the Euro NCAP will continue to be operated using traditional controls. Brands like Tesla, which have integrated wiper controls into touchscreen interfaces, will need to make adjustments to comply with the new regulations.
