Enforcement of South Carolina’s Ban on ‘Carolina Squat’ Begins on May 10th

Law enforcement officials in South Carolina have taken a stand against the “Carolina Squat” modification, with tickets being issued starting on May 10. This modification involves lifting the front end of a vehicle without lifting the rear, resulting in an uneven and potentially dangerous setup.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety has defined a squatted vehicle as one in which the front or rear fender is raised four or more inches higher than the other. This practice, while technically applicable to any vehicle with two axles, is commonly seen on pickups and SUVs rather than minivans.

Concerns over safety led lawmakers in South Carolina to ban the Carolina Squat. Having significantly more ground clearance in the front than in the rear can obstruct the driver’s view of the road, potentially causing them to overlook other vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians. Additionally, improperly adjusted headlights could blind oncoming motorists.

Notably, neighboring states like North Carolina and Virginia have already banned the practice, while Tennessee recently announced a ban on the “Tennessee Tilt.” Interestingly, the petition to ban squatted trucks in Tennessee received fewer signatures than the petition opposing the ban.

The ban was first announced in South Carolina on November 12, 2023, with a six-month warning period to allow drivers to adjust their vehicles accordingly. As of May 10, law enforcement will begin issuing fines: $100 for first-time offenders, $200 for second-time offenders, and $300 for third-time offenders. Those caught driving a squatted vehicle for the third time will also face a one-year suspension of their driver’s license. Compliance with state laws and regulations is essential to ensure safety on the road.
