Dashcam footage captures dramatic crash as semi-truck teeters off bridge edge

Dash cams and cellphones have become key tools in capturing and sharing everyday traffic incidents, but a recent semi-truck crash managed to capture national attention due to its severity. The driver’s camera recorded the harrowing accident that resulted in her large vehicle hanging off the edge of the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge, suspended 100 feet above the Ohio River.

In the footage, which features both in-cabin and front-facing views, a pickup truck is seen swerving into the lane of driver Sydney Thomas after rear-ending a stationary vehicle. The impact from the pickup truck pushed Thomas’ semi-truck to the left into oncoming traffic. Following a collision with the rails on the other side, the cab of her truck was left precariously hanging off the bridge. Fortunately, the trailer and parts of the truck remained attached on the bridge, with the hitch connection proving strong enough to support the tractor.

In a dramatic rescue operation, emergency crews rappelled off the bridge to safely retrieve Thomas. The erratic driving behavior displayed by the driver who caused the accident drew significant attention. The local district attorney stated, “This demonstrates an extreme lack of concern for human life, which could have resulted in serious injury or even fatalities.”

The driver responsible for the crash is facing various charges, including wanton endangerment and driving with a suspended license. Despite the close call, Thomas expressed her gratitude for surviving the ordeal. In an interview with WHAS, she recounted the terrifying moments, explaining, “When I went through the railing, I thought, ‘Is this how it’s going to end?’ He destroyed my suspension, making it impossible to regain control. I held onto the wheel as I lost control, unable to steer into the adjacent lane.”

Thomas reflected, “There were times when I prayed, and I questioned if anyone was listening. But on that day, God heard my prayers.” It serves as a reminder of the risks faced by drivers on the road and the importance of remaining vigilant at all times.
