If you find yourself pushing the limits with your fuel gauge, it’s time to rethink your approach to refueling. MarketWatch Guides recently conducted a study highlighting the vehicles with the shortest driving ranges once the low fuel warning light comes on, so it’s important to take heed of these warnings especially if you own one of the vehicles mentioned.
According to the study, the Hyundai Kona 2.0 Essential topped the list with a mere 36.97 miles of driving distance once the fuel light comes on. Other vehicles with short driving distances included in the study are worth noting as well.
These calculations were made by considering the maximum fuel tank capacity of each vehicle and determining a ten percent low-fuel threshold. Fuel economy ratings were then used to estimate the driving range for each model. However, it’s crucial to remember that several factors can influence gas mileage, such as external conditions, driving habits, and road conditions.
On the flip side, vehicles like the Toyota RAV4 offer over 73 miles of driving range, closely followed by the Ford F-150. While some models mentioned in the study might not be available in the U.S., like the RAV4 Icon FWD, they offer a good estimate of low-fuel driving distances for similar U.S. configurations.
Experts unanimously advise against driving with the low fuel light on regularly due to the risk of damaging the fuel system components. A near-empty tank can cause the fuel pump to draw in debris and sediment from the bottom of the tank, potentially leading to clogged fuel filters or overheating of the pump. So, it’s best to be proactive when it comes to refueling your vehicle to avoid any costly repairs down the road.
