Extra steps added to 2024 Ford Mustang oil change process

The 2024 S640 Ford Mustang requires a more complex oil change procedure due to its increased vehicle complexity. Landan Durham from Texas shop Late Model Restoration has created a helpful video demonstrating the process. One major alteration is the increased coverage for the underbody aero panels, requiring the removal of 15 screws and five push-type plastic retainers of two kinds to unhook the large rearward cover that hides the oil pan.

Replacing the panel can be tricky, as the large rearward panel must be slid above the forward panel for a stable and aerodynamic fit. Durham predicts that the 2025 model year will feature a trap door for the oil due to the difficulties encountered during the oil change process.

Mustang owners who change their own oil have been familiar with removing aero panels for years, but the 2024 model presents a new challenge. The engine tick in Ford’s 5.0-liter Coyote engine and the switch back to a steel panel and traditional bolt are also discussed in the video, providing valuable insights for Mustang owners considering an oil change shop instead of the dealer. It is recommended to avoid that route until those shops have gained experience with the 2024 Mustang’s oil change process.
