Porsche 911 Set to Receive 3.6-Liter Flat-Six and First-Ever Hybrid Upgrade

The upcoming refresh of the 992-series Porsche 911, known as the 992.2 series, is expected to bring significant updates to the iconic sports car. Among these updates are active vertical louvers in a new front intake design, new headlights with integrated turn signals, and a redesigned rear bumper with updated exhaust outlets. According to a report from Car and Driver, the debut of the new coupe is anticipated to take place within the next six months, marking a significant milestone as it will be the first-ever hybrid 911 in the lineage.

Before the hybrid variant arrives, Porsche is making enhancements to the standard lineup, with the 3.0-liter flat-six in the entry-level Carrera slated to receive a power boost of 11 horsepower and 16 pound-feet of torque, bringing its output to 390 hp and 347 lb-ft. Similarly, the engine in the Carrera S will see an increase of 11 horsepower and 16 lb-ft of torque, resulting in 454 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque.

The Carrera S and the Carrera GTS models are expected to benefit from 48-volt mild hybrid assistance, with the GTS receiving a larger-displacement 3.6-liter flat-six engine. This engine will eventually replace the 3.0-liter engine in the regular Carreras and will also be used in the GT3, GT3 RS, and S/T models to meet European emissions compliance. In the GTS, the 3.6-liter engine is projected to produce 483 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque.

Additionally, the Turbo models will undergo a downsizing of their engine from a 3.7-liter to a reworked 3.6-liter, resulting in improved efficiency.

Looking ahead, Porsche is also working on a hybrid model that will feature a twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine. This hybrid, developed in collaboration with Rimac, is not expected to be a plug-in and is estimated to be about 18 months to two years away from market launch. The system, dubbed T-HEV, adds a high-performance battery and an electric motor, delivering up to 90 hp and 129 lb-ft of torque. With two variants planned, the hybrid 911 is projected to offer combined outputs of 478 hp and 475 lb-ft, with another variant raising that to 528 hp.
