Tesla Model 3/Y competitor in the works for ‘mid-late decade’ with lucid planning

Lucid has an exciting lineup of vehicles in the works, with the Air Sapphire already creating a buzz. The Gravity SUV is next in line for production, set to hit the market late next year. Following that, Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson has revealed plans for a more affordable vehicle to compete with the likes of Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y, with a target price of around $50,000, emphasizing the company’s commitment to making electric cars accessible to a wider audience.

While the exact timeline for the release of this affordable model is yet to be determined, Rawlinson has indicated a “mid-late decade” timeframe, setting a placeholder of five years for now. However, with the rapidly evolving landscape of electric vehicles and the shift towards EV-only models by many OEMs, the competitive landscape could look very different by that time.

In the quest for efficiency, Rawlinson highlights the importance of smaller battery packs, stating that “The biggest impact on the mass market car will be with smaller battery packs.” With a vision of achieving six miles per kilowatt-hour, the goal is to reduce the size and cost of the battery pack, ultimately leading to a more affordable electric car priced around $25,000.

While the focus on efficiency and affordability is commendable, there are differing opinions on the range that future electric cars will need to offer. Rawlinson’s suggestion of 150 miles as a sufficient range may be met with skepticism by some. But with the evolving technology and market dynamics, the future holds many possibilities.
