Electric vehicle sales have seen a significant increase in recent years, yet automakers continue to face challenges with production, development, and raw material costs. In response to this, General Motors has announced plans to introduce plug-in hybrids to help meet the demand for electric vehicles. CEO Mary Barra has revealed that GM will begin rolling out new PHEVs in 2027 to comply with stricter fuel economy and emission standards.
Barra emphasized the importance of a robust charging infrastructure in overcoming the challenges of electric vehicles, stating that hybrids will play a key role in the transition. Despite discontinuing the Chevy Volt in 2019, GM recognizes the significance of plug-in hybrids in providing an electric driving experience with the added security of a gas engine backup.
According to Guidehouse Inc. analyst Sam Abuelsamid, GM’s timeline for introducing PHEVs may seem deliberate, but it allows the company to carefully develop models that align with consumer preferences. The strategic approach ensures that the PHEV technology is seamlessly integrated into the vehicles and corresponds with the overall vehicle program timeline.
