Lancia’s Final Attempt for Relevance: Introducing the New Electric Ypsilon City Car

Lancia, owned by Stellantis, has recently introduced the first new model in more than a decade. This new Ypsilon, exclusively offered with an electric drivetrain, represents the brand’s attempt to make a strong comeback after a period marked by stagnation and decline.

Initially planned for closure by former Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne, it was the executives at Stellantis who decided to give new life to Lancia and offer the brand an opportunity to prove its worth.

The latest generation Ypsilon was developed by leveraging the resources of the parent company and shares an underpinning platform with other popular small hatchbacks in Europe. Visually, it showcases design elements inspired by Lancia’s prestigious history, borrowing cues from historic models like the Stratos and highlighting the brand’s upmarket aspirations.

Inside the new Ypsilon, buyers will find premium features such as a digital instrument cluster, a touchscreen infotainment system, and unique details like a “small table” on the center stack, providing a stylish and luxurious appeal not typically found in small cars on the market.

In terms of performance, the Ypsilon is powered by an electric motor delivering 156 horsepower and is equipped with a 51-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that offers a range of approximately 250 miles. While the Ypsilon is initially launching as an electric model, Stellantis has announced its commitment to exclusively producing electric vehicles beginning in 2026.

As part of the brand’s revival strategy, Lancia will expand into European markets it previously left, aiming to capture the interest of buyers in Italy, Belgium, Holland, France, Spain, and Germany. However, there are no current plans to introduce the Ypsilon or future Lancia models in the United States.

As the new Ypsilon represents a premium offering in the small hatchback segment, it is positioned at a higher price point compared to competitors. The limited-edition model starts at €39,500, clearly targeting a niche market seeking a unique and stylish urban vehicle.

With its electric-only powertrain and premium features, the new Ypsilon represents an important step for Lancia in reclaiming its status as an esteemed brand in the automotive industry.
