Preview of 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class: Familiar Exterior, Innovative Technology Inside and Under the Hood

Ahead of the imminent release of the updated Mercedes-Benz G-Class, much attention has been on the new all-electric variant. Undoubtedly, a massive, three-ton powerhouse capable of incredibly spinning on its own axis is bound to attract a lot of interest.

However, it’s important to note that Mercedes is not solely focusing on electrifying the new G. The conventional internal combustion engine-powered G-Class is also undergoing a refresh, and we are excited to share all the details today.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class will maintain its sturdy ladder frame structure, three locking differentials, 9.5 inches of ground clearance, and ability to smoothly traverse through 27.6 inches of water. Simply put, it remains a formidable off-road machine, staying true to its current version.

This year’s upgrades primarily concentrate on improving on-road performance, enhancing interior refinement, and updating interior technology to align with the latest Mercedes models. The interior has undergone a significant overhaul, beginning even before you step inside. The 2025 G-Class now features proximity entry, although the doors still open with the trademark forceful clunk characteristic of the G. Upon entering, you’ll notice that the new G-Class retains some design elements from the previous model but incorporates a widescreen display running the latest MBUX infotainment software/UI with a combination of touchscreen and redundant center console touchpad. In contrast, the previous version relied on the outdated COMAND system operated through a peculiar combination of a rotary knob and glossy touch pod. Moreover, the digital instrument panel has been modernized, and a new Offroad Cockpit view leverages the 360-degree camera system to offer an “invisible hood” effect.

Additional standard equipment now includes wireless phone charging, climate-controlled cupholders, and lane-centering steering assist for the adaptive cruise control system. On the options list, you’ll find a dual-screen rear entertainment system and the choice of a Burmester sound system with Dolby Atmos.

While the electric version garners the most attention in terms of powertrain developments, the G 550 receives a brand-new engine for 2025. Replacing the 4.0-liter V8 is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a mild-hybrid system borrowed from other Mercedes models. This engine generates 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, marking an increase of 27 hp over the previous G 550, albeit with 37 fewer pound-feet of torque.

The AMG G 63, in the image above, receives 48-volt mild-hybrid technology paired with its hand-built 4.0-liter V8, maintaining its power output at 577 hp and 627 lb-ft. with a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds. This can be reduced to 4.2 seconds with the new AMG Performance Pack, offering a higher top speed of 150 mph, launch control, and enhanced on-road performance. The optional AMG Active Ride Control equips the G 63 with Mercedes’ hydraulic, anti-rollbar-free suspension system, akin to what contributes to the Rivian R1S’s exceptional off-road capabilities.

For those seeking adventure, the new AMG Offroad Package Pro introduces two specialized off-road drive modes (AMG Traction Pro and customizable AMG Active Balance Control), smaller 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, a Professional Line spare wheel holder, and a Professional Roof Rack with a playful rear ladder. Essentially, it’s the G 550’s Professional Edition translated to the G 63 while retaining the running boards. Additionally, the wood cargo floor from the Professional Edition is now an optional feature for the standard G 550 model.

From an exterior perspective, visual changes for the G 550 include four horizontal louvers on the grille and enlarged lower bumper inlets with new inserts, contributing to a lower drag coefficient of 0.48 compared to the previous 0.55.

While Mercedes has not disclosed pricing for these new packages, it’s worth noting that the current G 550 has a starting price of $143,000, and the G 63 begins at $179,000. Given the technological enhancements and increased capabilities, it’s unlikely that the new models will be more budget-friendly.

As for the much-anticipated electric version, stay tuned for further updates on that front.
