Polestar, now operating independently from Volvo, is facing internal challenges while also adapting to the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market with a limited and slightly pricey lineup. Following price reductions announced in March, the 2025 Polestar 3 Long Range Dual Motor equipped with the Pilot Pack will have a starting price of $74,800 plus a $1,400 destination charge. This model offers a powerful all-wheel-drive crossover generating 489 horsepower and 620 pound-feet of torque, with an estimated range of 315 miles on a single charge. The added Pilot Pack includes features such as Pilot Assist, Park Assist Pilot, Lane Change Assist, and a head-up display for enhanced convenience and safety.
During a recent media launch event, Polestar’s global head of communications hinted at a forthcoming rear-wheel-drive version of the Polestar 3 scheduled for later release this year in global markets. Although specific details are still forthcoming, initial reports suggest that this model will feature a single rear motor producing 241 horsepower, utilizing the same 111-kWh battery pack found in the dual-motor variants.
This new variant is expected to offer improved range compared to the dual-motor model, positioning the Polestar 3 in a competitive pricing segment between mainstream automakers like Ford and luxury brands such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Despite its larger size in comparison to the Tesla Model Y, the Polestar 3’s pricing aligns between the more affordable Ford Mustang Mach-E and the premium Tesla Model Y.
Future buyers may also have the opportunity to benefit from federal tax credits, as Polestar plans to shift production of the Polestar 3 to the United States by mid-2024. Initial models manufactured in Chengdu, China, will not qualify for the tax credit, but the upcoming American-made models may offer customers the chance to claim the $7,500 federal incentive. Production testing at the South Carolina facility has progressed smoothly, indicating a possible timeline adherence for U.S.-made Polestar 3 models.
With the promise of potential tax incentives and competitive pricing adjustments, those considering a Polestar 3 purchase may find it advantageous to wait for the U.S.-based production versions to become available in the near future. Stay tuned for further updates on this exciting development in the Polestar lineup.
