Parisians decide to triple parking fees for heavy, bulky vehicles, not just SUVs

The city of Paris is taking further steps to address pollution and congestion caused by vehicles in its urban area. A recent referendum saw a majority of Parisians voting to triple parking rates for heavy and polluting cars, including many electric and plug-in hybrid models. The new resolution will come into effect on September 1, 2024, and aims to discourage the use of large, heavy vehicles that contribute to the city’s environmental challenges.

Under the new regulation, motorists driving gasoline, diesel, or plug-in hybrid vehicles weighing over 1,600 kilos and electric vehicles weighing over 2,000 kilos will face higher parking rates. These changes will have financial implications for drivers of vehicles such as the Tesla Model Y, certain variants of the Volkswagen ID.4, and plug-in hybrid versions of the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC, which are all bound to be affected by the new law.

While the main goal of the law is environmental, city officials also plan to generate an additional €35 million in revenue annually. The measure will affect an estimated 10-16% of the vehicles that park in Paris, with the hope that it will contribute to cleaner and safer streets in the city.

Exemptions will be made for specific groups, such as Paris residents with parking permits, taxi drivers, entrepreneurs, health workers, and handicapped drivers. Additionally, parking in central Paris will remain free overnight and on Sundays, regardless of vehicle size or type.
