The Ford F-150 Lightning Switchgear is a remarkable electric off-road truck that showcases the potential of the F-Series in extreme environments. While not a production vehicle, it serves as a demonstration of what is possible when pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology.
Built in collaboration with RTR, the Switchgear features a custom double-wishbone front suspension, multi-link independent rear suspension, and Fox 3-inch diameter internal bypass shocks. These components, along with 37-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler tires and 18-inch wheels, provide the truck with exceptional off-road capability, boasting 11 inches of wheel travel in the front and 13 inches in the rear.
The exterior of the Switchgear is adorned with carbon composite front fenders, bed sides, and rear bumper, as well as steel rock rails, front bumper, and skid plate. The interior is mostly standard F-150 Lightning, but upgrades to Recaro Sportster ORV seats for all five passengers and includes six-point harnesses.
In addition to the off-road version, Ford has also developed a “street configuration” of the Switchgear. This version is equipped with Nitto NT420V street performance tires, 20-inch wheels, carbon composite front bumper, rocker skirts, and a Ford Performance tonneau cover. The ride height is lowered significantly for street performance, showcasing the versatility of the platform.
The Switchgear will make its public debut at the King of the Hammers off-road racing event on January 25 in Johnson Valley, Calif. Ford’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric truck technology with the Switchgear demonstrates the potential for future off-road and street performance EVs. This project serves as an inspiration for the development of more extreme and capable electric pickups in the future.
