Long-Term Review of the 2023 Subaru WRX: Evaluating Ride Quality

I had the opportunity to drive our long-term Subaru WRX equipped with winter tires for just a day, and I quickly understood what was being discussed among the staff. While some noted the lack of performance on dry pavement with the Blizzaks, the tune changed with snowy conditions. Unfortunately, I did not have the same experience. Despite concerns about the WRX’s stiff ride, my brief time behind the wheel did not leave me dissatisfied – perhaps I have a high tolerance for rough rides.

When the WRX was fitted with its summer tires, which were 245/40 Y-rated Dunlop SP Sport Maxx 600 A tires on 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, there was a noticeable improvement. The factory tires were deemed a better match for the car. Recently, I had the chance to revisit our long-term WRX Limited after some time off and a comparison test with the WRX TR.

Subaru describes the WRX’s standard suspension as “track-tuned” and highlights the chassis-mounted rear anti-roll bar and high-performance summer tires for grip, stability, and minimal body roll. The WRX delivers on these promises, providing an exhilarating and controlled experience when tackling corners.

However, the ride quality on the Limited model left something to be desired compared to the TR trim with its upgraded suspension. Despite expectations, the TR handled rough roads with ease while the Limited felt rough and uncomfortable. The upcoming comparison test will delve deeper into these differences.

Despite the initial discomfort, I have come to appreciate the WRX’s setup more over time. The thumps, bumps, and noise become less noticeable, and the car proves to be a great blend of spirited driving capability and daily practicality. I now find myself enjoying every drive in the WRX, even if it’s just a short trip across town. It will be interesting to see how my experience compares in the future when driving a similarly balanced and entertaining car with a smoother ride.
