How did an old-fashioned guy like me end up driving a Tesla Cybertruck?

As an automotive enthusiast with a collection of classic vehicles, including a 1969 Mustang and a 1967 F-100, my recent addition of a Tesla Cybertruck may seem like a departure from my traditional preferences. However, after spending nearly two weeks and 350 miles behind the wheel of this futuristic electric vehicle, I have found myself unexpectedly smitten.

The order and delivery process with Tesla, unfortunately, left much to be desired in terms of communication and transparency. From placing the order in December to receiving a delivery date of May 1, we were left in the dark about the status of our Cybertruck. Calls to Tesla and visits to the service center provided little clarity, with inconsistent information being the norm. This lack of effective communication was frustrating and, in my opinion, an area where Tesla should improve.

Upon receiving our Cybertruck on May 1, I was pleased to find that it was clean and in good condition. However, there were some minor issues with fit and finish, such as burrs on the stainless steel panels and a small scratch on the quarter panel. These issues will be addressed at a service appointment, but overall, the build quality was satisfactory.

Driving the Cybertruck has been a unique experience, especially for someone who is new to electric vehicles. The learning curve for operating the vehicle, from starting it to shifting gears, was steep but manageable. The touchscreen controls for various functions, including heat and air, suspension settings, and performance settings, took some getting used to but offer a wealth of customization options.

Visibility in the Cybertruck is excellent out the windshield, but the thick A-pillar can make it challenging to see around blind spots. The acceleration in both “chill mode” and “sport mode” is impressive, and the ride quality in “chill mode” is exceptionally smooth. The suspension and seats offer excellent comfort, even over rough roads, which was appreciated by my wife, who has pain issues.

One of the most notable aspects of driving the Cybertruck is the unique steering system, which is responsive and precise. The variable-ratio, steer-by-wire system takes some getting used to but offers a level of control and agility that is surprising for a vehicle of this size.

In terms of range, recharging the Cybertruck to 80% provides a range of just over 250 miles, which is in line with the estimated 300-mile range. While we haven’t driven it extensively to test its full range, the initial impressions are positive.

Despite my initial reservations about the Cybertruck’s unconventional design, I have come to appreciate its bold aesthetic and innovative approach to pickup truck styling. The exterior design, while polarizing, is eye-catching and unique, drawing attention wherever it goes. The ability to walk around the vehicle and discover new angles and reflections adds to its appeal and sets it apart from traditional pickup trucks.

In conclusion, my experience with the Tesla Cybertruck has been a journey of discovery and appreciation for the capabilities of electric vehicles. While there were some challenges during the order and delivery process, the driving experience and unique design of the Cybertruck have ultimately won me over. As someone who appreciates traditional vehicles, the Cybertruck has opened my eyes to the future of automotive technology and design.
