Hidden Treasure: Abandoned 2003 Subaru Baja

When considering the 2003 Baja, it’s hard not to recall the Subaru BRAT, a pickup version of the Leone sold in the US during the late 70s and 80s. Despite legal issues stemming from the jumpseats used to circumvent the Chicken Tax, the BRAT left a lasting impression. It made perfect sense for Subaru to apply the BRAT concept to the larger Legacy, resulting in the Baja that we have today. The 2003 Baja in question was recently discovered at a junkyard in New Orleans, a city known for its vibrant culture and association with the 24 Hours of Lemons racing event.

Typically, Subarus in junkyards are hard to come by in Colorado due to the vehicle’s popularity in the region. However, in New Orleans, two Baja pickups were found at the Pull-a-Part, indicating a different perspective on the Baja’s desirability in the region.

Produced from 2003 to 2006, the Baja met its end due to lackluster sales performance. Despite being deemed the sixth most embarrassing car to drive in 2013, the Baja’s unique design as a stretched Legacy Outback with a pickup bed attached garnered attention. Sporting a 2.5-liter boxer-four engine, the Baja was available with either a naturally-aspirated 165 horsepower or a turbocharged 210 horsepower option. This particular Baja houses the non-turbo engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission.

Unfortunately, the demise of this Baja seems to be attributed to blown head gaskets, a common issue with Subaru’s boxer engines. Despite evidence of a gasket kit present, the final owner likely decided it wasn’t worth the effort to repair. Interestingly, personal touches like Subaru Love badges hint at a devoted owner with diverse interests spanning from pets to Scouting.

In conclusion, the Baja may have faced a premature end, but its unique design and loyal following showcase the impact of Subaru’s innovative approach in the automotive industry.
