Hidden Treasure: 1986 Chevy Celebrity Wagon in the Junkyard

The decline of station wagons started in the 1980s with the emergence of minivans and SUVs, overshadowing the Chevrolet Celebrity and other models. This rare ’87 Celebrity station wagon we found in a Denver junkyard illustrates the fading era of traditional family haulers.

The Chevrolet Celebrity, part of GM’s front-wheel-drive A Platform, was a bestseller from 1982 to 1990 with over 2 million units sold. Its siblings included the Buick Century, Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera/Cruiser, and Pontiac 6000, forming a diverse lineup for consumers at the time.

Personal experiences with the Celebrity vary, as my family’s lemon tale contrasts with devoted enthusiasts still cherishing these classics. In fact, a recent junkyard find sparked a heartwarming journey for enthusiasts seeking rare parts for their beloved wagons.

This specific Celebrity wagon, with under 44,000 miles, caught the attention of a Colorado couple active in Lemons racing. After selling their rally-ready Celebrity to an Iowa enthusiast, they connected him with a goldmine of parts salvaged from the junkyard.

The discovery of the car’s build sheet, showing lavish options, added to the excitement. Built in Oklahoma City and sold new at Osborn Chevrolet in Aurora, this Celebrity boasted a 2.8-liter V6 engine among its features.

Despite being equipped with a high-output engine and advanced audio system, this Celebrity surprisingly lacked the rear-facing “wayback” seat common in wagons of its era. Its fate may be sealed in a crusher soon, but its legacy lives on through enthusiasts preserving these automotive relics.

The end of the Celebrity era paved the way for newer models like the Lumina and Lumina APV minivan, marking the gradual shift in consumer preferences towards modern family vehicles. Yet, the nostalgia for these classic wagons like the Chevrolet Celebrity remains strong among a dedicated fan base, reflecting a bygone era of American automotive history.
