The Volkswagen ID.GTI will make its debut in 2026 and hit the market in 2027.

The battery-electric Volkswagen ID.GTI is set to be released in early 2027, with a target price of around 30,000 euros ($33,029 U.S.). However, there has been no word on U.S. availability. The vehicle will be based on the upcoming ID.2all supermini, which is expected to arrive in 2025 at a price point of 25,000 euros ($27,544 U.S.). Andreas Mindt, VW’s head of design, teased the ID.GTI with a sketch alongside the vintage GTI and indicated that an electric version of the iconic model will be introduced in 2026.

Comparing the specs, the concept’s length and wheelbase are similar to the VW Polo GTI, although it is taller than the Golf-based GTI. The cargo space is slightly smaller than the Golf GTI, but there is more space overall when the back seat is folded down. The VW R&D team has already tested a drivable prototype, which is slightly smaller than the show car.

The standard ID.2all is expected to offer two battery options, with the larger one providing a predicted range of 280 miles on the WLTP cycle in Europe. The ID.GTI is expected to have even more powerful motors, offering a range that could put it ahead of some of its competitors.

In terms of design and performance, the ID.GTI is expected to have more than 223 hp, front-wheel drive, a locking front differential, and a “GTI Experience Control” mode selector. The Golf is also making the electric transition, and VW has plans for the R division to develop all-electric scenarios for the Golf, with the GTX nameplate reserved for all-wheel-drive performance trims.

Considering the electric future of VW’s GTI and Golf models, enthusiasts and consumers can look forward to a new generation of electric vehicles that uphold the legacy of iconic VW models.
