The 2025 VW GTI: Buttons are back, but the stick shift is out

Volkswagen has introduced the latest version of the Golf, which will make its way to the US as the 2025 GTI. While the manual gearbox will no longer be available, the new model features a dual-clutch gearbox, offering engaging performance for both everyday driving and track use. The GTI’s power has also been increased to 262 horsepower, and the touch-based infotainment system has been updated with new physical controls and improved underlying tech.

In addition to these updates, the 8.5 GTI will feature a new version of the software suite, addressing previous issues with the infotainment system and offering more features. The redesigned center stack and illuminated climate controls aim to enhance the overall ergonomic experience in the cabin. Furthermore, other than the updated cabin and powertrain, not many changes have been made to the Mk 8.5 GTI.

The release detailed the European market variants less three, including the GTI Clubsport, Golf R, and Golf R wagon, which will be revealed later in 2024. Only the GTI is scheduled to come to the US, with more information on the Golf R expected to come when it is launched in Europe. This announcement effectively confirms that only the GTI and the Golf R will continue to be available in the US after 2021. Keep an eye out for more details on the Golf R as its European launch approaches.
