Stellantis issues recall for 285,000 vehicles due to faulty side airbags that may explode and release shrapnel

Stellantis, a leading automotive manufacturer, has issued a recall for nearly 285,000 Dodge and Chrysler sedans due to a safety concern regarding the side air bag inflators. The inflators have the potential to explode with excessive force during a crash, posing a risk of metal fragments being hurled at both drivers and passengers. This recall specifically affects the side air bag inflators on Dodge Chargers and Chrysler 300 large cars produced between the model years 2018 and 2021.

The root cause of this issue is attributed to a manufacturing defect that could allow moisture to penetrate the inflators, leading to corrosion and cracks over time. While Stellantis has received seven warranty claims and customer assistance reports related to this problem, fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result. To address this safety concern, authorized dealers will replace both side air bag modules, with notification to owners beginning on May 3.

Stellantis estimates that approximately 1% of the affected inflators may be defective. These inflators, manufactured by Joyson Safety Systems, were acquired following the bankruptcy of the Japanese air bag maker Takata. Takata had previously used ammonium nitrate as a propellant in its air bags, a material that can degrade when exposed to high temperatures and humidity, potentially leading to rupture and the release of metal shrapnel.

While details regarding the specific design and components of the recalled Dodge and Chrysler air bags are still pending verification, it is crucial to stay informed about the ongoing recalls in the automotive industry. Following the Takata air bag crisis, which resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries globally, safety remains a top priority for manufacturers and regulators alike. It is vital for vehicle owners to respond promptly to recall notifications and take necessary actions to ensure the safety of themselves and their passengers.
