Mini’s 2025 lineup has shown that the brand is moving away from its “mini” roots in terms of size. Similarly, the Smart #5 is also breaking away from its small car image. This hatchback is larger than the Mini Countryman, with dimensions similar to the Tesla Model Y but two inches taller. With proper midsize proportions, the Smart #5 offers a spacious cargo bay that can hold up to 54 cubic feet with the second-row seats folded. Additionally, a front trunk (frunk) adds another 2.5 cubic feet of storage, and the cabin boasts 34 storage areas for added convenience.
Recently unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show, the production version of the Smart #5 features rounded edges and subtle detailing that enhance its minimalist two-box design. All Smart vehicles are built on Geely platforms and designed in Mercedes-Benz’s design studios. While full details such as power outputs and charging capabilities have not been released yet, the Smart #5 is set to hit European showrooms next summer.
The Smart #5 is built on Geely’s SEA2 platform and is powered by a 100-kilowatt-hour battery with an 800-volt electrical architecture. The battery can achieve a rapid charge from 10% to 80% in just 15 minutes. On the Chinese cycle, the Smart #5 boasts an impressive range of up to 460 miles. Buyers can choose from single-motor drivetrains with outputs ranging from 335 to 386 horsepower, or opt for dual-motor setups with 579 hp or 637 hp.
The launch lineup includes two trims: the Premium, which is well-equipped with rear-wheel drive, and the off-road-focused Summit with all-wheel drive. The Premium trim comes loaded with features like a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, and a premium Sennheiser audio system. The Summit trim adds rugged elements like a light bar and trailer hitch, while an optional Adventure’s Collection package enhances its off-road capabilities.
Inside, the Smart #5 is designed for adventure and comfort. Zero-gravity seats can recline up to 121 degrees, and the rear seats can be laid flat to create a spacious bed. The high-tech cockpit features multiple screens, including a 25.6-inch head-up display for the driver. Passengers will interact with an AI lion avatar, offering a unique and immersive experience.
Future models of the Smart #5 will include an entry-level version and a high-performance Brabus variant. While the European debut of the Smart #5 is scheduled for spring 2025, the automaker is monitoring developments in the EU regarding tariffs on China-built vehicles, with a final decision expected in November.
