Should GM’s driverless Cruise taxis remain parked?

General Motors (GM) is still fully committed to the potential growth of its Cruise robotaxi fleet, despite uncertainties surrounding its future. GM CFO Paul Jacobson recently expressed the company’s support for Cruise, explaining that while the brand aims to reduce expenses by a substantial $1 billion this year, the company remains invested in the tech and its engineering staff. While Cruise’s future operating structure is still under review and will be further addressed later this year, news of the accident involving a Cruise vehicle has raised questions about the brand’s safety and future.

Following a tragic incident in which a Cruise vehicle injured a pedestrian in San Francisco and subsequent suspension of Cruise’s license by California’s Department of Motor Vehicles, Cruise halted all driverless operations. The fallout from the accident led to the departure of Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt and is the subject of ongoing government investigations.

The challenges faced by Cruise raise doubts about its viability and necessity, with auto experts suggesting that GM may be better off abandoning the Cruise project. Additionally, Cruise’s financial performance, with a mere $102 million in sales and $2.7 billion in losses last year, has brought into question its long-term potential. As GM continues to invest in electric vehicles, critics argue that it might be more beneficial to allocate resources away from Cruise and toward areas with more demand, like EVs.

In light of GM’s efforts to cut costs and focus on shareholder value, continued support for Cruise may clash with the company’s overall strategic priorities. Despite initial support from some analysts, negative headlines and financial performance are impacting Wall Street’s perspective on Cruise. While some analysts see Cruise as essential to GM’s future success, others have voiced concerns about its viability. With the company’s stock under pressure, the future of Cruise remains uncertain as GM weighs its options and long-term strategy.
