Review of the 2024 Honda HR-V: Practical, but only average

The 2024 Honda HR-V continues to be one of the most popular SUVs in the United States for first-time car buyers and Gen Z members. It’s easy to see why, with its spacious, high-quality cabin, top safety scores, and renowned Honda dependability and resale value. However, while the HR-V is a sensible choice, it lacks the sporty or outdoorsy options that other subcompact SUVs offer. In addition, it is slower and less fuel-efficient than its competitors.

The interior of the 2024 HR-V is reminiscent of the Honda Civic, featuring high-quality materials and a well-designed cabin. The in-car technology includes improved touchscreens that are similar to those in the Civic. However, compared to rivals like the Kia Seltos and Chevy Trax/Buick Envista, the HR-V’s technology is not exceptional but still competitive.

The HR-V is both larger and about the same size as the previous model, providing ample passenger space and good cargo space. However, the narrow liftgate opening makes loading luggage challenging and reduces functionality compared to competitors. The HR-V is powered by a 2.0-liter engine that delivers below-average output, resulting in modest fuel economy and slow acceleration.

Despite its lack of power, the HR-V delivers a refined driving experience with an impressively weighted steering and controlled body roll. However, it lacks the engaging performance found in the Mazda CX-30 and Chevy Trax.

Starting at $25,395, the HR-V is competitively priced but falls short in terms of performance and functionality compared to its rivals. It also lacks special trim levels offering sporty or off-road features found in other subcompact SUVs. While the HR-V remains a practical and reliable choice, other models in the segment may offer more for the money. Examples include the Chevrolet Trax, Buick Envista, Kia Seltos, Subaru Crosstrek, Kia Niro hybrid, Hyundai Kona, Volkswagen Taos, Mazda CX-30 and Nissan Kicks.

Overall, while the 2024 HR-V offers sensible transportation with Honda dependability, its competitors provide more character, performance, and functionality at similar or lower prices.
