Reportedly, the upcoming Bugatti will be equipped with a NA V16 PHEV powertrain generating 1,800 horsepower.

Bugatti’s Chiron successor has been generating buzz among automotive enthusiasts, with exciting details beginning to emerge. One major update is the shift from the quad-turbocharged W16 engine to a 90-degree V16 powerplant housed in a new carbon monocoque.

Bugatti-Rimac CEO Mate Rimac shared valuable insights about the new engine during the Financial Times’ Future of the Car summit in London. According to reports, the V16 engine alone measures 39.4 inches in length, significantly longer than the previous W16 engine. When factoring in the hybrid component, the power unit extends to nearly two meters in length.

In a strategic move, Rimac successfully advocated for the V16 engine’s approval within the Volkswagen Group, overturning initial plans for an electric SUV or crossover utilizing Rimac’s battery-electric platform. This decision proved prescient in light of current market conditions, as Rimac Automobili is still looking to fill its 150 Nevera build slots.

Unlike the turbocharged engines of the past, the new Bugatti model will feature a naturally aspirated V16 unit developed in collaboration with Cosworth. Boasting an 8.3-liter displacement, a high 9,000 rpm redline, and a projected output of approximately 1,000 metric horsepower, the engine is a powerhouse in its own right. When combined with an expected 800 horsepower from the hybrid system, the new Bugatti is poised to exceed the Chiron’s 1,587-horsepower output.

The innovative hybrid setup includes e-motors in the transaxle and front wheels, powered by a sizable 24.8-kWh battery. Notably, the system’s design allows for an impressive 60 kilometers of electric-only driving on the European cycle, setting it apart from other performance PHEVs on the market.

With a target weight below 4,400 pounds and performance projections indicating rapid acceleration and impressive top speeds, the upcoming Bugatti promises to be a game-changer in the automotive landscape. Anticipation is growing for the official reveal, scheduled for next month at Bugatti’s headquarters in Molsheim, France. Reports suggest a limited production run of 300 units or fewer, adding to the exclusivity of this highly anticipated model.
