The 37th edition of sailing’s America’s Cup has brought together the best yachtsmen, cutting-edge design, and technology in Barcelona, Spain. Five boats from Italy, the United States, Britain, Switzerland, and France will compete in the Mediterranean waves to determine who will challenge Emirates Team New Zealand for the prestigious Auld Mug.
Leading the standings after the opening races is the British team from Ineos. As the two-time defending champions, the Kiwis selected Barcelona’s challenging waters as the venue and played a key role in setting the rules and boat design for this year’s competition. They have secured a spot in the final to be held in October.
The AC75 boats being used in this edition represent a groundbreaking shift in sailing design, resembling futuristic spacecraft rather than traditional sailboats. These foiling monohulls are equipped with hydrofoils that allow them to glide over the water at speeds of up to 50 knots per hour. The crew members, including cyclists called “cyclors” instead of grinders, operate these high-tech vessels with precision.
Emirates Team New Zealand, the defending champions, are considered the team to beat, having won the last two editions of the America’s Cup. They will compete in the opening round but will sit out the next two rounds as other teams vie for a chance to challenge them in the final. Led by helmsman Peter Burling, the Kiwis are known for their innovative boat designs and flawless execution.
Other notable challengers include Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team from Italy, INEOS Britannia from Britain, NYYC American Magic from the U.S., Alinghi Red Bull Racing from Switzerland, and Orient Express Racing Team from France. Each team brings a unique blend of sailing expertise and technology to the competition.
The format of this year’s America’s Cup includes a round-robin stage to eliminate the weakest challenger, followed by two playoff series to determine the finalist who will face off against New Zealand in a best-of-13 series starting on October 12. Additionally, the event features a new Women’s America’s Cup and a youth competition.
Taking place in Barcelona, Spain, the America’s Cup promises to attract millions of tourists and generate over a billion euros for the city. With Louis Vuitton returning as the official sponsor and the trophy secured in a custom Louis Vuitton case, the event is set to showcase the glamour and luxury associated with international sailing competitions. Fans can expect thrilling races, innovative boat designs, and intense competition as the world’s best sailing teams battle it out for sailing’s most prestigious trophy.
