NHTSA Initiates Investigation into Fisker Ocean for Door Malfunction

The U.S. auto safety regulator has initiated a preliminary investigation into Fisker’s 2023 Ocean SUVs following reports of door malfunctions. Complaints have been received regarding intermittent failures of the latch and handle, preventing the opening of driver, front passenger, and rear doors, with some complaints mentioning issues with the emergency override mechanism as well.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will conduct a preliminary evaluation to determine the scope and severity of the problem to evaluate its impact on safety. It is important to note that the investigation could conclude without any further action taken against Fisker.

In addition to the current investigation, NHTSA is also looking into two previous incidents involving the 2023 Ocean SUVs, one concerning brake issues and the other related to unintended vehicle movement.

Fisker, facing financial challenges after being delisted from the NYSE due to non-compliance with listing norms, is exploring various restructuring options following the collapse of talks with a potential investor. The company recently announced price cuts on its 2023 Ocean SUV models in an effort to increase sales and raise funds to meet its financial obligations amidst dwindling cash reserves.

Like many other electric vehicle manufacturers, Fisker is navigating intense competition and consumer cautiousness towards major purchases due to economic uncertainties and higher borrowing costs. The company recently announced a six-week pause in vehicle production in response to these challenges. Stay tuned for updates on this developing situation.
