Jeep issues recall for almost 200,000 plug-in hybrids due to defroster problem

Jeep has recently announced a safety recall affecting nearly 200,000 units of the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid SUVs produced between the 2021 and 2024 model years. This recall is related to a software issue that disables the windshield defroster in the vehicles.

Designated as recall number 24V-111 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall specifically includes the following SUVs:

– 139,318 units of the 2021 to 2024 Wrangler 4xe manufactured between September 2, 2020, and August 24, 2023.
– 59,825 units of the 2022 to 2024 Grand Cherokee 4xe built between July 23, 2021, and December 5, 2023.

In total, 199,143 vehicles are affected by this recall, and Jeep confirms that the issue is present in 100% of the recalled vehicles. Although the problem manifests in the windshield defroster, the root cause has been identified as an incorrectly programmed hybrid control processor (HCP) from the factory, leading to the disabling of the defroster.

Driving with impaired visibility due to a foggy windshield poses an increased risk of accidents. However, rectifying this issue is straightforward. Jeep advises owners of the affected vehicles to visit an authorized dealership for a software update of the hybrid control processor. The brand has already initiated the process by informing dealers in February 2024 and plans to reach out to impacted Wrangler and Grand Cherokee owners by mail in April 2024. Customers who have already incurred costs to fix the problem can seek a refund by providing proof of payment to Jeep.

Jeep’s Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance division commenced an investigation into the matter on June 21, 2023. After months of examination, the issue was pinpointed in January 2024, leading to the recall being issued shortly thereafter. It is important to note that vehicles manufactured after the specified dates are not affected as they were produced with updated software.
