Hidden Treasure: 1987 Subaru GL 4WD Wagon with 324k Miles Discovered in Junkyard

When exploring car graveyards for historically significant vehicles, Subarus with over 300,000 miles are quite rare finds. Subarus from the 1980s may not be as durable as modern ones, but owners tend to upgrade to newer models rather than spending on major repairs. The popularity of Subarus in Colorado is nearly a state law, as almost every resident owns one.

The 1987 Subaru GL Leone station wagon featured in the image was a part of a series of vehicles that were progressively named Leones in the U.S. market. Known for their Subaru badge, these vehicles were distinguished by trim levels where GL was the most common variant. The GL model, priced at $10,708, came equipped with standard air conditioning but offered an AM/FM/cassette radio with extras for music lovers.

Under the hood, the GL came with a 1.8-liter SOHC boxer-four engine that delivered 90 horsepower and 101 pound-feet of torque. For more power, a turbocharged version was available with 115 horsepower and 134 pound-feet of torque. In terms of drivetrain, Subarus introduced their first full-time four-wheel-drive system in 1987, setting the foundation for their renowned all-wheel-drive lineup in later years.

Unfortunately, the GL station wagon met its end due to rust, crash damage, and overabundance in the local auto collecting scene. As a collectible, this Subaru offers a glimpse into the automotive history of the brand and the evolution of their vehicles over the years.
