First Drive Review: Chevrolet Equinox EV for 2024 – A Compact Win for Chevy

Last week, we had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the highly anticipated 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST, an electric version of Chevy’s iconic Silverado truck. As impressive as the Silverado EV is, there’s another electrified offering from Chevrolet that deserves just as much attention – the 2024 Chevy Equinox EV. This compact crossover is Chevy’s latest foray into the electric vehicle market, offering an attractive and affordable option with impressive range.

While the Silverado EV may be out of reach for some consumers due to its price and size, the Equinox EV caters to a wider audience with its compact SUV design. Chevy’s marketing director for cars and crossovers, Brad Franz, is confident that the Equinox EV will be a game-changer, offering ample range without the hefty price tag of some other electric vehicles on the market.

The Equinox EV comes in two versions – a front-wheel-drive model with a single motor that provides 319 miles of electric driving range, and an all-wheel-drive model with two motors that can travel 285 miles on a single charge. While the performance may not be as exhilarating as some other EVs, Chevy has managed to keep the price difference between the two variants relatively modest at $3,300.

In terms of charging capabilities, the Equinox EV can regain up to 77 miles of range in just 10 minutes on DC fast charging, and up to 36 miles of range per hour with Level 2 charging. The vehicle also offers bi-directional charging, allowing owners to use it as a generator in emergency situations with the purchase of additional accessories.

Chevy has positioned the Equinox EV as the successor to the Bolt EV, targeting educated and affluent buyers while also appealing to a new audience ready to make the switch to electric. With its competitive pricing and solid performance, the Equinox EV is set to compete against a range of electric SUVs in the market, including offerings from Kia, Hyundai, Ford, and even Chevy’s own Blazer EV.

Despite the stiff competition, the Equinox EV stands out with its stylish design, impressive range, and the backing of one of the most established automakers in history. It drives like a hatchback with light steering and a well-balanced suspension, offering a sporty yet comfortable ride. The interior is equally impressive, with a modern design and quality materials that rival competitors in the internal combustion realm.

As we navigated the streets of Detroit in the Equinox EV, it quickly became apparent that Chevy has a winner on its hands. With a starting price of $46,795, this compact crossover offers a compelling package that is sure to appeal to a wide range of buyers. Whether you’re a longtime Chevy fan or a newcomer to the brand, the Equinox EV is worth considering for its affordability, range, and overall driving experience.
