Certain Hyundai Palisades are being recalled due to valve train issues.

Hyundai recently issued a safety recall affecting over 4,000 units of the Palisade SUV built during the 2024 model year. This recall was prompted by a valve spring failure issue that could potentially lead to major engine damage, such as puncturing a hole in the engine block. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has assigned recall number 24V-106 to this campaign, which covers 4,245 units of the Palisade manufactured between August 21 and October 12, 2023.

The problem with the valve springs was traced back to manufacturing, which was handled by a third-party supplier. Hyundai identified that the valve springs were damaged during production and could fracture due to fatigue cracking while driving. Valve springs play a critical role in allowing air into the engine and releasing exhaust gases out, as well as opening and closing valves to prevent them from falling into the cylinders. Therefore, a fractured valve spring could result in a sudden loss of engine power without warning, and in rare cases, a broken valve could drop into the combustion chamber and puncture the engine block, increasing the risk of a fire.

Despite no reported crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to this issue, Hyundai is taking proactive measures to address the problem. The company will contact affected Palisade owners by mail starting on April 13, 2024, urging them to bring their vehicles to an authorized dealer for a free replacement of the engine sub-assembly. The valves and valve springs from the cylinder head will be replaced to prevent any potential risks associated with the defective parts.

The Palisade is powered by a 3.8-liter V6 engine that Hyundai’s sister company, Kia, also uses in the Telluride SUV. Following Hyundai’s recall, Kia issued a similar recall, assigned number 24V-077 by the NHTSA, affecting 2,872 units of the Telluride manufactured from October 1 to December 6, 2024. Kia anticipates that around 3% of the recalled vehicles may have the defective valve springs and will begin notifying owners by mail on April 5, 2024, to schedule a complimentary replacement of the engine sub-assembly, mirroring Hyundai’s approach to resolving the issue promptly and effectively.
