Canada to implement a 100% tariff on electric vehicles manufactured in China

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that Canada will be implementing a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles being imported into the country. Additionally, a 25% tariff will be imposed on imported steel and aluminum from China, Trudeau revealed during a press conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The decision to impose these tariffs comes after a 30-day public consultation period on Chinese EVs and related products that Canada initiated, aligning its policies with those of the United States and the European Union. Trudeau emphasized that these tariffs are necessary because China is not adhering to the same rules as other countries.

By taking these measures in coordination with other global economies, Canada aims to solidify its position as a key player in the electric vehicle supply chain. The Canadian government has faced pressure internally to address China’s practices in the automotive sector.

Canada has secured significant deals with leading European automakers to enhance its manufacturing capabilities in the EV sector. This strategic move is part of a larger effort to strengthen the country’s manufacturing industry.

While the United States is set to announce final plans for implementing tariff increases on Chinese imports this week, there is speculation that these duties may be moderated from the initial proposals made by President Joe Biden earlier this year.
