Rivian set to launch new product globally on March 7

Rivian’s Big Plans for Laguna Beach Location

Local news in Laguna Beach, Calif., recently reported on Rivian’s presence at a city council meeting where the electric vehicle maker made a significant request regarding its flagship U.S. retail location at South Coast Theater in Laguna Beach. The company plans to host a “worldwide product launch event at the Rivian Theater” on March 7, 2024, and has asked permission to display six vehicles at Main Beach Park, with no additional lighting or amplified sound. Despite some opposition, the council approved the request.

For those following Rivian, the focus is now on what will be showcased at the worldwide launch and which vehicles will be part of the lineup on the beach. Speculation suggests that the smaller R2 in SUV-styled R2S form will be the marquee product at the event.

RJ Scaringe, the company’s CEO, hinted at a less expensive model, the R2, during an Instagram Q&A session last May. Sized similarly to the Jeep Grand Cherokee and with starting prices estimated to be in the $50K range, the R2 was initially scheduled for delivery in 2026, although the release was delayed from the original 2025 plans. Whether it will make an appearance at the launch event or simply serve as an introduction for a future reservation period remains to be seen.

While the map presented at the council submission features only five vehicles, Rivian fans are hopeful that two of the showcases may be for high-powered versions of the R1T and R1S, rumored to be named “Ascent” and equipped with 1,000-hp engines. This potential reveal is anticipated to take place in about six weeks.

In addition to the exciting product developments, Rivian has welcomed key executives from the automotive industry, including ex-Stellantis North America COO Carlo Materazzo, ex-Mercedes-Benz plant manager Arnehelm Mittlebach, and ex-Porsche and Apple mobility veteran Jonas Reinke. These strategic hires indicate a promising year ahead for Rivian.
