Auction house RM Sotheby’s has announced the upcoming sale of a 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, a vehicle that is set to overshadow even the most modern hypercars. This particular model is one of just 19 ever produced, and it was created before the renowned 250 GTO. Throughout its racing career, the 250 Testa Rossa stood out as one of Ferrari’s most successful race cars.
Designated with the chassis number 0738 TR, this 250 Testa Rossa is equipped with a Pontoon-Fendered body crafted by Italian coachbuilder Sergio Scaglietti. It achieved victory in four of the nearly 20 races in which it participated shortly after leaving the Maranello factory. Initially raced in Brazil, the car notably secured a win in the 1965 edition of the Rio de Janeiro Grand Prix. It then changed hands between several Brazilian owners before being brought to the United States in the 1980s. Although it was re-bodied in the 1960s, it remarkably retained its original drivetrain.
While it may seem absurd to make significant modifications to a rare classic car, many multi-million-dollar vintage race cars at auctions were worth very little when only a few years old. As classic Ferrari models gained value and interest, chassis number 0738 TR was completely restored by Ferrari Classiche, earning the coveted Red Book certification that confirms the car still houses its original engine and gearbox.
Featuring a 3.0-liter V12 engine, the 250 Testa Rossa gets its name from the Italian phrase “Testa Rossa,” which translates to “red [cylinder] head.” With only 19 models ever produced, this Ferrari is a shining example of true rarity in the automotive world.
RM Sotheby’s has stated that chassis number 0738 TR has been part of a private collection for over a decade, hinting that this could be a unique opportunity for enthusiasts looking to acquire this prestigious vehicle. The auction is set to take place in Detroit, Michigan, on February 21, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern time, with the closing scheduled two days later. With Sotheby’s estimating the 250 Testa Rossa to sell for up to $38 million, owning a piece of Ferrari history will come with a substantial price tag.
