Kia announces recall of nearly 80,000 units of the 2011 Sorento due to fire hazard

Kia has announced a recall involving almost 80,000 units of the 2011 Sorento due to the potential risk of engine fire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has assigned this recall number 23V-877, with 1% of the affected crossovers estimated to have the problem. These specific models were produced between October 24, 2009, and June 24, 2011, at the Georgia plant, and are equipped with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine without the knock sensor detection system software. It’s important to note that this recall is distinct from a previous campaign addressing a different fire risk.

While Kia has provided limited information about the issue, they have stated that an engine compartment fire could occur while driving due to various reasons. Signs of a potential fire may include unusual noise, burning smell, smoke, or the illumination of the “check engine” light. However, details regarding the exact cause or location of the fire have not been disclosed.

Kia is urging owners of the affected vehicles to schedule an inspection at an authorized dealership, where a technician can assess the engine and make any necessary replacements. Additionally, dealers will be installing knock sensor detection system software as a preventive measure. For vehicles receiving this software, Kia will provide an extended engine warranty plan for 15 years or 150,000 miles, and customers who have already paid for related repairs can request a refund. The automaker will begin notifying affected owners by mail starting on February 9, 2024.

This proactive approach by Kia aims to address potential safety concerns and provide peace of mind to customers while maintaining a high standard of quality and reliability across its vehicle lineup.
