The BYD Shark PHEV Pickup Truck Makes its Way to Mexico

Hybridization is becoming increasingly prevalent in pickup truck offerings worldwide, with a range of options from smaller models like the Ford Maverick to larger vehicles such as the F-150 and Toyota Tundra. The trend now extends to plug-in hybrids, with upcoming models like the Ramcharger and the Jeep Gladiator 4xe. The BYD Shark, a Chinese pickup truck making its way to Mexico this year, introduces a plug-in hybrid powertrain with impressive specifications.

In terms of design, the BYD Shark features a body-on-frame chassis with a longitudinally-mounted engine, specifically a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder. What sets it apart is the presence of double-wishbone independent suspension at all four corners, along with a unique powertrain configuration. The engine is connected to the front motor, while a separate motor drives the rear wheels. This setup functions akin to a series hybrid, though the engine can also provide direct power to the front axle when needed. With 228 horsepower from the front motor, 201 horsepower from the rear motor, BYD boasts a combined output of 430 horsepower and an estimated 0-62 mph time of 5.7 seconds.

The BYD Shark is equipped with a 29.6 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack that offers an estimated electric range of 62 miles on the NEDC cycle. Charging capabilities include both AC and DC fast charging with a CCS connector, enabling a 30% to 80% charge in just 20 minutes on a DC charger. The vehicle also features a vehicle-to-load functionality for powering external devices.

In terms of utility, the BYD Shark offers a payload capacity of 1,841 pounds and a towing capacity of 5,512 pounds. While lacking a low-range mode, the electric powertrain compensates with strong low-end torque. The truck’s dimensions compare favorably with models like the Toyota Tacoma and Chevy Colorado, with similar payload capacity and slightly lower towing capacity.

Beyond its performance, the BYD Shark presents a distinct aesthetic with its rugged, square-shouldered design and sporty interior accents like orange stitching. Unique features include a swiveling center infotainment screen and an optional karaoke function with a handheld microphone.

Pricing for the BYD Shark is competitive within the midsize truck segment in Mexico, with a base price of $53,948 when converted to U.S. dollars. This places it slightly above rivals such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma in terms of pricing. While the potential for the BYD Shark to enter the U.S. market remains uncertain due to tariffs and other challenges, its arrival in Mexico signals a shift towards electrification in the pickup truck sector.
